FWIW, I have the same problem. It helped when I switched around the
pc_mouse and pc_kbd arguments, i.e. doing console -d vga -d pc_mouse 
-d pc_kbd /dev/vcs.

Also, if you put vga last, the console might not blank (but just
freeze). This would give you the benefit of seeing any possible error
messages (though I get none).

I don't have working network with my Hurd installation, so it would be
great if you could debug this. Maybe Marco can help you with that.
