I've heard a couple success reports of distcc and ccache working with
glibc.  distcc can work with cross-compilers, so if you can get a fast
machine nearby, you might be able to at least do a make -j 4 or
something like that and cache some old results.

You'll still have to put up with the Makefile suckiness, though.
