You can still save it, settrans -fgap on each (/hurd/ext2fs, etc).
Hope you didn't reboot though.

   Maybe you're the first one to make this mistake, but I doubt you
   will be the last one, so maybe the Hurd should behave different in
   such a situation.

   So, should "settrans" refuse to set a translator if the translating
   program (in this case /dev/hd1s1) is not executable or is there any
   reason not to do this?

I don't see why not.  It is not like if you could run it in either
case, since a translator is, and more or less must be, a executable.

I will whip up a patch if anyone is interested in either case.
