Um, well, the behavior you see is certainly inconsistent. But one problem here is that the user-level behavior is *always* supposed to be to entirely ignore trailing slashes, according to Posix, IIRC. The semantics of dir_lookup are different from that, and I don't know the details about which library changes you might or might not have on your system.
