   The Debian glibc build of 2.2.3-6 (CVS 6-9-2001) fails because
   of that.

I don't see any problems with the current CVS version.  Yes, it uses
MAXPATHLEN, but only as a reasonable default, and io/fts.c defines it
to 1024 if it isn't already defined.
