Hum... actually for some reason I read virtual terminals instead of
virtual consoles, even though the word "consoles" is in both the title
and the content of the original e-mail. All apologies for being stupid
:).

Now, why isn't screen installed by default, my guess is that whatever
installation method you use, you only get a "minimal" Hurd system.
screen is really usefull but you can live without it.
