FWIW, rms was ready to decommission oleo at one point, as I recall.
Would anyone actually use it instead of one of the other spreadsheet
    programs these days?

I use sc (much simpler than oleo) in a daily basis. I have used oleo
in the few cases where sc was not powerful enough for my needs.

I understand that gnumeric is the successor of GNU oleo, but having a
full-fledged spreadsheet in the console is useful. Apart from the
people mainly working in the console in their desktops, it is included
in handheld devices such as the Ben Nanonote.
