+1, it would also be helpful if 'make' was not being run with Automakes
silent mode, which hides how the compiler is being invoked.
I was able to build this testdir fine in a Debian oldstable container
using './configure CC=clang':
$ gnulib-tool --create-testdir --dir testdir1 assert assert-h \
malloca
So I suspect something is/was messing with the compiler flags.
