Might be better to look at POSIX regex matchers. But this is a biiiig topic. I remember the late Tom Lord spent a lot of time on it, and got something to work (see <https://www.atai.org/gnuarch/releases/tla-1.3.5.tar.gz> and look for rx; it's GPLed) but no doubt it would need a lot of work too (and it's not LGPLed).
