You're not as cheap as UCLA. My GNU/Linux desktop there is still based on an AMD Phenom II X4 910e (released 2010). No AVX of any flavor though it does support the same SSE2 that came out with the Pentium 4 in the year 2000.
And don't get me started on our department's central Solaris 10 SPARC server with its 750 MHz UltraSPARC III (released 2001).
