Thanks for the hooks for Emacs. As Emacs has its own calendar code that 
in some places disagrees with Gnulib's, for now I installed the 
following patch into Emacs master. It's conservative in that it leaves 
the Emacs non-Gregorian calendar code alone, and disables the new Gnulib 
stuff using the hooks you supplied.
