Oh, I used my own snapshot (using the coreutils commit I mentioned earlier), and used Ubuntu's Autoconf 2.72-3 to generate my 'configure' instead of 2.72.70-9ff9 which is what you used. I suppose that could explain why mine worked and yours didn't. I didn't investigate further, as I assume Bruno fixed the underlying problem.
While looking into this I noticed that Coreutils didn't build with Oracle Developer Studio 12.6 cc, due to a violation of the C Standard that gcc doesn't mind but cc does. I installed the following Coreutils patch to fix that:
