I agree with your analysis here too, even though I expressed support for
the automake helper library approach in my last e-mail.  This is good,
we now have two ways to deal with issues like this.  I suspect that
there could be some case where there simply is no *.c #pragma or
__attribute__ keywrod that works, and a real compiler flag is necessary.
