Thanks for feedback -- I think this question should go to Jim though, since I don't recognize that code path. Changing the --help text and/or the error message seems straight-forward, and I agree the wording makes it difficult to understand how to fix the problem, but reading the code makes this obvious. Hmm. However, why can't announce-gen use 'gnulib-tool --version' to figure out the gnulib version? It goes to some effort to actually try to output something like git version string. Probably it didn't do that when announce-gen was written. One reason against may be that announce-gen is useful even if someone didn't use gnulib-tool. So how about announce-gen uses the same code as gnulib-tool contains to figure out the gnulib version? Yeah... following through after this change fell between the cracks. The right thing to do is to implement this in coreutils. Having hex encoded sha256 checksums looks ugly in email, and going back to them now seems like a move in the wrong direction. /Simon
