As Bruno noted, the '\|foo|{...}' construct remains a problem. However,
I'll replace the echo with [printf '%s\n' "$blah"].

I agree, actually; that's why I couched this in terms of supporting
older seds in general, rather than NS qua NS.
I'm currently playing around with Bruno's --create-testdir suggestion,
and will follow that up. (I so wish I had played around with this back
when it was new... :)
