Not all platforms support Unix sockets (AF_UNIX/AF_LOCAL is lacking on
mingw) or IPv6 sockets (AF_INET6 is lacking on various platforms).  For
that matter, you could probably find a platform these days where AF_INET
(IPv4) is useless, although it will probably still compile and just be a
runtime failure.  Other address families supported by Linux are
non-standard, and unlikely to work in portable code.

But pretty much every platform has some form of socket support.
