Indeed. He was just passing along what someone else sent to him. I
expect rms himself does not have any more info :(.
dropped support for the split-buffer code
So Emacs has to have a forked regex forever? How unfortunate.
But I do recall how much agony there was in the implementation with the
split buffer, so I can't say I'm surprised.
