Is it also necessary to wrap safe-read.c with extern "C", for use when using g++ as a type-safe variant of a C compiler, to match the header? Or do you intend that safe-read.c always be compiled by gcc, even when trying to compile the rest of a C-based project with g++? And should you be symmetric with safe-write.h? - -- Life is short - so eat dessert first!
