I know that gcc-2.7.2.1/gcc.c supports both -Wl and -Xlinker. The date
on the gcc.c file is 1995-09-12 for that release. It is the oldest
version of the sources for gcc-2.x I happen to have on hand.

I do not believe that gcc-1.42 supported either of those switches and
I believe 1.42 was the last gcc 1.x produced.
