[..] Took another peek over the hot cider, and after removing the "LINK target" statement from ~/.dircolors, I deleted the soft link to the directory, and recreating it put a stop to these strange goings-on.
In other words, I a back to the situation that I described in my initial post. Since I was more interested in the opportunity to review ls capabilities beyond the very basic than the OP's initial feature request, I don't know if it's worth a formal bug report. But I would be very curious to know how a change of options regarding the formatting of the output of the ls command could have such effects on the file system. Thanks, CJ
