Bug ID: 34735
Summary: The 'ar' command leaves garbage temp files when using
the -M option.
Product: binutils
Version: unspecified
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: binutils
Assignee: unassigned at sourceware dot org
Reporter: steve at sjbaker dot org
Target Milestone: ---
The 'ar' command has a (poorly documented) -M flag to allow you to access a
command language from a ".mri" file. Aside from the fact that the 'man' page
and the --help output barely mentions it - there is an actual bug.
When you use an .mri file with '-M' to archive some .o's and .a's - it creates
an empty file named 'stxxxxxx' where xxxxxx seems to be random alphanumerics.
It never cleans up these files - and there is no documentation that I could
find about them.
ASIDE: The MRI file option is EXTREMELY useful for complex automated build
systems where assembling a shell command line to run 'ar' is messy. Using an
MRI script is way better - especially when using version control and such.
It's a very handy system - and it deserves some love!
