Right, so the real problem was the illegal binding value used in one of the
symbols in the POC file.  This caused all kinds of confusion in the linker and
ultimately resulted in the illegal memory access.  So I have checked in a small
patch to cause the linker to stop if it ever reads in a symbol with an illegal
binding or type value.
