I think that it is needed. At the very least I would like to know why
the assertion is wrong before removing it.
Please can you create a testcase that we can use to reproduce the problem ?
It would also be very helpful to know if the problem still persists with the
current mainline development binutils sources, and not just the old 2.24
sources.
