I didn't miss the fact that your complaint is with -l:. I based my reply on
the ld documentation which says of -l
If @var{namespec} is of the form @file{:@var{filename}}, @command{ld}
will search the library path for a file called @var{filename}, otherwise it
will search the library path for a file called @file{lib@var{namespec}.a}.
What's more, this was the intent of -l: when support was added to GNU ld in
2007.
You seem to be making use of an undocumented ld feature, in actual fact a ld
bug, that has since been fixed. I see no reason to revert that fix.
