You could try turning off section garbage collection (--no-gc-sections) as this appears to be turned on. If you really have 1.2 Gb of object files then I am not sure if you can reasonably expect the linker to be anything but slow when you only 1G of real memory available. I would strongly urge trying the link on a bigger machine.
