This has the potential to affect more than just ld. For instance, I know that the gcc testsuite would need adjusting if this change was made unconditionally.
I suggest that you raise this issue on g...@gcc.gnu.org, preferably supplying a libiberty patch, to gain the attention of c++ and libiberty maintainers.
