I suppose it's harder to do for things mentioned in the linker script, and there's an obvious way to do it manually - in keeping with the verbose and precise nature of GNU linker scripts. I've been tossing around ideas for a less verbose format, possibly for gold which already works well without one...
Meanwhile, for this bug. I'm not sure about editing the NEWS entry since the current behavior may be more recent than 2.6.
