The current docs for the .ident pseudo-op read:
@cindex @code{ident} directive
This directive is used by some assemblers to place tags in object files.
@[EMAIL PROTECTED] simply accepts the directive for source-file
compatibility with such assemblers, but does not actually emit anything
for it.
But, at least for x86 Linux, .ident does emit the tag in a .comment section.
