Did you change the job control system and the external command exit code capture mechanism in versions 4.4.23 to 5.0.0?
I took a look at the change log and couldn't find anything that seemed relevant.
If these improvements prevented the problem from recurring, then we decided to give up on further troubleshooting. Do you think our approach is reasonable?
I think it's reasonable to use a newer version of bash if it doesn't
exhibit the problem.
