I said that I would be willing to look at changing user messages in source
files, though I thought that gettext removed some of that burden for
translated strings (I think I'm wrong there). I would probably not go to
the lengths that coreutils does; I think that's unnecessary. It's fine to
use two single quotes. People will get the point.
What Martin is complaining about most bitterly is using `word' in prose:
change logs, NEWS, README, etc.
