I did indeed mean parentheses.
Being told for 12 years of childhood that () are "brackets" sometimes
inadvertently surfaces even decades later.

Perhaps there should be some sort of definition at the top of the manual.
Something like: In this manual [ ] are brackets, ( ) are parentheses, {
} are curly braces ... etc.
Perhaps also: shopt options compiled in raw bash are: extglob off ... etc.
