Most of this looks to be solved, or solvable now, but I see no-one seems
to have replied to this particular comment:

No, that's trivial:

        case $- in
        *a*)    ;; # set -a
        *)      ;; # set +a
        esac

just fill in whatever code you need.   No externals, no difficulty.
