Have you tried bash-4.1 patchlevel 11 with this? Patch 11 addresses an issue with fc and seg faults. I can't reproduce this on RHEL5 using bash-4.1.11. If you can reproduce it using bash-4.1.11, it would be helpful to somehow get a stack traceback of the faulting process.
