With bash, you could probably use the PROMPT_COMMAND special variable. With zsh again: PS1='[EMAIL PROTECTED]:%4(~:...:)%3~%# ' You can also truncate the path to a specific width, see info -f zsh -n 'Prompt Expansion' -- Stéphane
