POSIX states that "Users should not need to set this variable in the environment unless there is a specific reason to override the implementation's default behavior, such as to display data in an area arbitrarily smaller than the terminal or window." But if it is causing you problems, you can simply do: export LINES COLUMNS before invoking your app that does not know how to query the terminal for its normal size. - -- Life is short - so eat dessert first!
