Looking at the release notes, I'm not sure how I missed this.  Sorry
for the noise.

Ok.  I just thought perhaps the docs could be clarified to mention the
distinction between "input characters" and "non-escaped characters". 
It's less of an issue now that the aforementioned bug has been fixed
and the behavior can be discovered emperically
