Hello Travis. Automake 1.9.6 is almost five yars old by now. There is any compelling reason forcing you tu use such an old version? If not, why don't you try the latest automake release (1.11.1) instead?
Note that you should avoid Automake 1.11, since it has a security vurnerability (this vurnerability is shared also by version 1.9.6, BTW). Moreover, you are IMHO more likely to be helped if you report bugs for the current Automake version, rather then for a five-years-old version. HTH, Stefano
