Dear Maintainer,
The style/expl3.el style file changes the syntax class of the symbols _
and : (underscore and colon) to "w". This style file ends up loaded in
regular documents (via, for example, hooks in fontspec.el and unicode-
math.el), where underscore is used to typeset subscripts, and this has a
number of undesirable effects. To mention just two that caused me to
discover the bug: it breaks fontification in prettify-symbols-mode and
forward-word and backward-word do not work as expected.
Please revert this change. It seems that the original reason for it was
to make the fontification in LaTeX programming using expl3 look
prettier but I don't think this is the correct way to achieve this. For
example, in c-mode, where _ can be part of identifiers, navigation by
word (M-f, M-b) works correctly, that is, _ is not considered part of
the word.
In any case, I believe that this kind of change should only take
effect in ExplSyntaxOn/ExplSyntaxOff code blocks and not in a regular
LaTeX document. Perhaps it is possible to create a special major mode
for LaTeX programming, where fontification needs are different from
these in a regular document, and use it by default in sty files. In
a regular document, one could switch it on temporarily in
ExplSyntaxOn/ExplSyntaxOff, makeatletter/makeatother code blocks, like
in org-mode.
