Pulse Data International releases KeySoft 5.1 for the BrailleNote Family of
Products
5 March 2004, Maurice Sloane, BrailleNote Support Manager.
Pulse Data International is pleased to announce the launch of KeySoft
version 5.1, the latest innovation in software technology for the
BrailleNote family of products. The major new feature of KeySoft 5.1 is
the completely re-written Planner application, supporting recurring
appointments, and synchronisation with Microsoft Outlook.
KeySoft 5.1 is a free upgrade for all version 5 customers. For clients
having a software maintenance agreement, it will not decrement your SMA
count.
KeySoft 5.1 is distributed from the Software Distribution Web (SDW) site.
User's are able to log on to the SDW using the Serial Number of their
BrailleNote/VoiceNote, check their current software eligibility status, and
if desired download available software, and Release Notes.
In the following discussion the term BrailleNote applies to all models of
the BrailleNote/VoiceNote family of products. Headings for the topics
discussed are:

What's New in KeySoft 5.1?
In our opinion, KeySoft 5.1 gives you one of the most powerful planners on
the market today, yet in the familiar friendly KeySoft style where you
don't have to grapple with graphical interfaces to get the job done.
KeyPlan in KeySoft 5.1 uses a single database to store all planner entries,
rather than the separate year files that are used in KeySoft 5.0 and
earlier versions of KeySoft. The first benefit of this is that the
boundaries between years no longer exist. If you wish to reschedule an
appointment from 2004 to a date in 2005, this is easily done.
When you make appointments, you can now specify an end time, as well as a
start time, for appointments. This allows you to block time in your
Planner, and you will be advised if you attempt to make an appointment
which conflicts with an existing one. You can choose to accept the conflict
or reschedule one of the appointments. The end time can be on a date that
is different from the start date, allowing you to schedule appointments
that span more than the one-day.
KeyPlan in KeySoft 5.1 allows you to specify the location of an
appointment, to mark time as free, busy, tentatively scheduled, or out of
the office. Some minor changes, such as the Next Appointment feature that
now advises you how many appointments you have remaining today, make the
Planner even more useful.
And most significantly, KeyPlan will support a wide range of recurring
appointments. You can schedule your appointment according to dates, or
patterns of days, weeks, months or years - for example an event may be on
the 25th of every month, or on the third Thursday of every month, or every
25th of March, or every day at 9am, etc. There is a pattern of recurrence
to cover just about every type of recurring event you could think of.
A new version of KeySync, version 1.1, will mean that you can synchronize
appointments with Microsoft Outlook.
We've also added the much-requested Word Count feature to KeyWord, allowing
you to determine the number of words in a document without having to
perform a spell check on the document. For Braille keyboard machines, this
is obtained by pressing Space with I from within KeyWord, and for Qwerty
machines by pressing Control with Read with I. This will take you to an
Information menu, which in addition to allowing you to get the title of the
document now lets you obtain a Word Count.
The On-line Help and Electronic User Guide have been fully updated to
include the new features.
What's in the KeySoft 5.1 Upgrade Package?
There are 2 components to the KeySoft 5.1 upgrade package, one for the
BrailleNote, and one for your PC running Windows 2000 or Windows XP.
If you don't intend to use the KeySync facility to Synchronize your
BrailleNote Planner and Address List with Microsoft OutLook's Calendar and
Contacts list, you do not have to download and install the 'KeySync PC
(1.1)' set-up software.
The BrailleNote Flash Disk install package is a self-extracting zip
package, which may be installed either by ActiveSync or from the
'Application Program' option on the Utilities menu. The BrailleNote
install package for all models is named 'KeySoft 5.1 Build 19 (nnnnn).exe',
where (nnnnn) represents the serial number associated with the package.
The install package is typically around 1.7MB in size.
The KeySync set-up program is around 600K in size, and when installed on
your PC, it will install the KeySync program to the PC, and determine
whether your PC has the necessary Microsoft system components installed.
If these components are not present, you are offered the choice to go
on-line and have the components downloaded and installed.
The Microsoft dot.NET system components are of significant size, up to 27MB
depending on what components are required. If you don't have access to a
high-speed Internet connection you should consider requesting a copy of the
'BrailleNote Family PC Software V5.1' CD from your closest Pulse Data
International sales office. A charge will apply for the supply and mailing
of this CD.
Where does the KeySoft 5.1 Flash Disk Upgrade install its files?
As the name implies, the KeySoft 5.1 install package, installs files onto
your BrailleNote Flash Disk. The installation software will check that
sufficient free disk space exists before commencing the software upgrade.
Can I have KeySoft 5.1 burnt into ROM?
SMA and Single Step Upgrade pricing is based on installing the upgrade to
the Flash Disk, and does not allow for burning the image into ROM.
At this point no decision has been made as to the release of a ROM image
for KeySoft 5.1. If made available, a separate charge will apply if you
wish to upgrade your ROM image, and you should contact your Pulse Data
International sales outlet to determine the availability and cost
Am I Eligible to Receive KeySoft 5.1?
Your eligibility to receive the KeySoft 5.1 Flash Disk upgrade is dependent
on one of the following:
1. Your BrailleNote is currently running KeySoft 5.0 build 24 or has the
KeySoft 5.0 Build 25 ROM image.
2. Your BrailleNote was purchased after 1 February 2003, and is fitted
with the Second Edition motherboard, as identified by the extra Compact
Flash card slot on the back panel.
3. You have purchased an SMA for your BrailleNote. The SMA is normally
only available for BrailleNote units that have the new Second Edition
motherboards.
4. You have purchased a Single Step Upgrade that upgrades your software
from KeySoft 4.0x to KeySoft 5.0. Again, the Single Step Upgrade is
normally only available for BrailleNote units that have the new Second
Edition motherboards.
How do I Confirm my Current Software Status?
If you consider that you are eligible to receive the KS5.1 Flash Disk
Upgrade, you may go the SDW User site to establish the status of your
current software eligibility.
Details of the SDW User site address will be given in a separate
information release.
Once you have entered the Serial Number of your unit and the logon
Password, you will either be taken to the 'KeySoft SMA options' screen
where a summary of available software will be presented, or you will
receive a message indicating 'Invalid serial number or password, please try
again, or email [EMAIL PROTECTED]'.
Under the 'Downloads Available' section of the 'Keysoft SMA Options' screen
you will find radio buttons corresponding to the software packages that are
available to you. These would typically be: KeySoft 5.0 and KeySoft 5.1
Build 19.
The 'Additional Components' shown at the bottom of the page, change
according to which KeySoft version radio button is checked. For example,
if you have checked 'KeySoft 5.1 Build 19", the displayed items are:
KeySync PC (1.1), Release Notes Part 1, and Release Notes Part 2.
If on entry of your serial number and password you receive the 'Invalid
serial number or password' message, it indicates that we may hold no
records for your unit on the SDW site. This may be correct, or it may be
an error, and if you feel that you are entitled to receive the KeySoft 5.1
upgrade, please send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] This email should
include your name and address details, the model and serial number of your
BrailleNote, and information such as Invoice details that will assist us to
resolve your enquiry in the most expedient manner.
How do I Determine the Serial Number of my BrailleNote?
The Serial Number of your unit may be determined from the Main Menu, by
pressing SPACE with I for units with Braille keyboards, and READ with I for
units having computer style keyboards. Press the SPACE bar repeatedly
until the serial number information is displayed. The number that you are
looking for is just the 5-digit number prior to the first dash. For
example, if the displayed serial number was "Serial Number
13287-13287-800-US", the number you would enter is '13287' without the
quotation marks.
Why does my SMA Status show 0?
People who have purchased an SMA will notice that their 'SMA Status' may be
reported on the SDW site as '0 SMA Updates Remain'. Please be assured that
we are aware of your current SMA status, and this will report correctly
once the SMA "Plug-in" component is activated. Please remember that
KeySoft 5.1 is a free upgrade to all users of KeySoft 5.0 and it will not
decrement your SMA count.
The '0' SMA status does not effect your ability to download KeySoft 5.1.
What happens if an upgrade is required to KeySoft 5.1?
If you are eligible to receive KeySoft 5.1 Build 19, you will also be
eligible to receive any subsequent minor release packages. Such minor
releases would typically be to fix bugs, and would be differentiated from
the original by a change in version and build number. For example, KeySoft
5.11 would be deemed to be a minor release. The release of any minor
KeySoft upgrade would be publicly announced, and the installation package
generated off the SDW site would automatically include the updated
software.
Can I use my BrailleNote to download the upgrade?
Yes, you may use either your PC or BrailleNote to download the KeySoft 5.1
installation package.
If you intend to install the 'KeySync PC (1.1)' component, we would
recommend that you use your PC to download this.
Can I Download my software more than once?
You may logon to the SDW site whenever you wish, check your software
status, and re-download available software packages.
For example, you may initially decide that you don't need to install the PC
KeySync (1.1) software, so you only download the KeySoft 5.1 install
package. Some time in the future, you decide that you now wish to use the
KeySync feature, so you simply return to the SDW site and download the
'KeySync PC (1.1)' set-up package.
I asked for my software on Compact Flash?
Auto-shipping is expected mid April to those clients who paid for their SMA
software to be supplied on Compact Flash. Because this release contains a
new release of KeySync PC, you will also receive a 'BrailleNote Family PC
Software V5.1' CD.
Of course, you may also go onto the SDW site and download and install the
software prior to receiving your copy on Compact Flash card.
Should I keep a copy of this email?
Yes, we recommend that you save this email in a safe place, until you are
sure that you have no need to refer to it again. If you need to obtain a
copy, please send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] requesting a copy.
This Overview document is also available from SDW site when you have
successfully logged in. It is referred to as "Release Notes Part 1".
Where can I obtain help?
Do not to be concerned if you find that your displayed software status
differs from your understanding of what it should be. Please send an email
to [EMAIL PROTECTED], outlining what you consider the discrepancies to be,
and we will investigate and work together to resolve issues.
Thank You
