Hi Mary Ellen,
Right now, off the top of my head, I can think of two other uses for the 
infrared port.  One is to connect the BN directly to a printer or embosser 
equipped with an infrared port, so you can simply execute the command to Emboss 
or Print a certain thing, and it would be done right away without the hassles 
of transferring the material to a PC and then printing.  Another use I can 
think of is to use it to go on the Internet with the BN and a cell phone.  If a 
cell phone has an infrared port, you can use that port vthe one on the BN to 
establish a connection between the two, and then use KeyMail and KeyWeb with 
this instead of a network or dial-up connection when it's convenient for you.
