Hey everyone.
(I'm trying to cross-post this to both -devel and -users; if you'd like
to discuss this -devel is probably the most appropriate list, but that's
not hard and fast ;)
A little while ago various people suggested that we should look at
setting up some kind of organisation or something to hold project
assets, receive donations or stuff of that sort.
I found the Software Freedom Conservancy:
http://conservancy.softwarefreedom.org/
>From their website:
"One of the principal benefits of joining the Conservancy is
that member projects get all the protections of being a
corporate entity without actually having to form and maintain
one. These benefits include, most notably, protection from
personal liability for the developers of the project. Projects
can continue to operate in the same way they did before joining
the Conservancy [..]
"The Conservancy is a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization, so
member projects can receive tax-deductible donations to the
extent permitted by law. [..]
"Another benefit of joining the Conservancy is that projects can
use it to hold assets, which are managed by the Conservancy on
behalf of and at the direction of the project.[..]
"All of these benefits are provided for free [..]"
I think those are the main highlights - essentially, it's a lot like us
setting up our own non-profit: we have all the control, but none of the
paperwork.
So, a little while ago I enquired about the Bongo Project joining the
Conservancy - I think this was in February time. I'm pleased to say that
following a recent meeting of the Conservancy, they've formally invited
us to join!
At this point, then, we need to have a proper discussion about joining
the Conservancy: the offer is on the table, and we as a project - and,
the contributors in particular - need to decide one way or another.
There is a formal agreement that I will make available which contains
the actual terms, but in general it merely formalises what is already
the case (that Bongo is a free software / open source project, etc.)
I'd be grateful for any thoughts people have, and whether or not we can
do this by e-mail, or whether we should have an IRC meeting too?
Cheers,
Alex.
