(I built basically the svn, and it was within the last month.) Cairo is 1.12.16. One thing that isn't so current is xorg; I basically built a straight 7.7 (as opposed to the newer versions in the book). So that's xorg-server 1.12.2. I'm happy to give versions of other things too, but I figured listing everything would be excessive, since I had no idea where the problem was (gtk has _many_ dependencies). Searching on cairo-xserver related problems makes me think it might be https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=47266. Which seems itself to be a rather confused jumble of issues, but it's a starting point (and involves the same versions of cairo and xserver). So I can experiment with this.
