I had a similar, perhaps the same, situation in my build as described in 
this thread:

This link is to the last post in the thread. The only difference I have 
discovered in our situations is that you could complete the boot 
process. I couldn't. I'm wondering if the difference is the result of 
your using a "wired" connection.

As I said in the linked post, it looks like Network Manager needs to 
start after the boot process. Xfce4 has an "autostart" function that I 
used. Don't know how a similar situation works in KDE.
