Yes, that was my thought also.  I think that LFSers sometimes start 
building things because they can without really understanding why.  Many 
times it's because of an optional dependency.  On my music server, the 
only audio really needed (for me) is alsa-utils, mpg, and vorbis-tools. 
  I was going to do some things with pulseaudio, but haven't gotten back 
to that.
