OK, now that I've looked at current blfs I see your point. I've no idea if the blfs editors expect you to be able to copy and paste everything. Certainly, the commands in the book look sensible. All that messing about just so that $PWD/bin and $PWD/lib can be used during the build! I still think these particular commands look like they can be copied and pasted, it's only if you put them into a script of your own that running 'bash' will be a problem.
