I have not tried that.  It used to be very painful because the
version in TL was very modified from upstream's version (modified
_by_ upstream, to suit TL's build which prefers to use old versions
of everything and static libs.

But this I disagree with, I looked at one point and saw in my log
that -lpotrace was used for libptexenc.so.1.3.0

OTOH, I've now built the package at least a dozen times with various
settings and I don't see -lpotrace in my latest logs for either svn
or 9.1.
