An early season visit to the Carden Plain was rewarded by a Loggerhead Shrike posing on the top wire of the fence, right beside Bluebird Box #14, at about 1:00PM today.
It flew across Wylie Road and seemed to settle around a Hawthorne bush about half way across the field on the west side of Wylie Road - behind Box #10. Also watching the Loggerhead Shrike was a male Merlin, perched in a nearby tree. I hope he was just birding, and not planning dinner. Other birds seen from Wylie Road included: Northern Harrier Turkey Vulture Eastern Meadowlark Killdeer Eastern Bluebird Red-winged Blackbird All of the birds seemed to be males. No pairs were seen. Directions: The Carden Plain is located about 5 km north of Kirkfield. Drive past the lift lock area to the second road on the right. Bob Ross Toronto
