Hi, I would like to help as well. In September 2019 I contacted Ondřej Surý about releasing BIRD2 via Debian Backports (a prerequisite is having it in testing in the beginning).
Not sure what happened (very likely I am to blame myself, but it's been a while...) but the contact stopped at some point. Maybe it's a good thing to revisit. I'll seek for my notes at the time and figure out where to pick up.
