Dear Christiaan,

The problem was fixed by our school adviser on computers.  He first checked 
that, after creating a new user, he could use BibDesk normally on this account. 
 So the problems had to be in the fact that the new Mac had imported from a 
back up disk some setting configurations from the old Mac.  Indeed, after 
throwing out some of the setting files, we could run BibDesk normally.

I thought you would like to know how the problem was settled, and that I am 
happy to be able to use my .bib files again!
