When I submit a query, for example to Pubmed, the results returned are
always fewer, much lower in number, than with a direct search in a
browser on that webpage.

Browser: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/?term=aspirin
70,167 results

BibDesk: aspirin
50 results

Browser: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/?term=aspirin+influenza
253 results

BibDesk: aspirin influenza
49 results

Browser: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/?term=covid
179,001 results

BibDesk: covid

That can not be right. For queries to LoC or DBLP+ it is maximum of 100
results,

What's going on there? Is that the wrong usage pattern on my side, did
they change something server-side, is that a limit to expect in queries,
or this a bug in BibDesk?
